Weiss Furniture has been a staple in Latrobe and neighboring areas for nearly a century after its inception in 1924 by then-owner Joseph Weiss and his son Hymen.
The family-owned company has gone through several iterations of ownership throughout the years, and it has competed against chain furniture stores to solidify itself as one of the top furniture destinations in the region. That’s a big part of the reason why Weiss Furniture was voted as the winner of the 2019 Readers’ Choice Gold Award for Best Furniture Store in the Westmoreland region.
Current owner Richard Dunhoff joined the company in 1976 as advertising and promotions manager and took over after his brother David retired in 2007. Mr. Dunhoff said the recognition his store has received starts with the work of his dedicated staff. “It feels great to win this,” Dunhoff said. “I’m happy that our manager (Rick Leonard) and the salesmen contribute to that. It’s their attitude that makes it successful.
“There certainly is some competition with the department stores. This year we did some things with the Internet and Facebook advertising.” To stay competitive in a market with all the department stores and online sales prevalent, Dunhoff joined a buying group based in Harrisburg to help Weiss Furniture offer its customers the fair prices he said they deserve. The buying group allows smaller furniture stores to negotiate pricing and gain special advantages when it comes to product availability.
“There’s been a long history in Westmoreland County of our customers coming to Latrobe to buy furniture,” Dunhoff said. “It’s a difficult world, but we try to give people the service they deserve.”
Weiss Furniture not only sells furniture, it also staffs skilled craftsmen that service and repair many products as well.
